Caprylic acid – what is it?

Caprylic acid is a saturated fatty acid that occurs naturally in many high-fat foods – the best-known example is coconut oil.


Due to its chain length of six to twelve carbon atoms, caprylic acid is classified as a medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA), which is considered easier to digest than long-chain fatty acids. When combined with glycerol, caprylic acid forms so-called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) – the basis of commercially available MCT oil.


Which foods contain high levels of caprylic acid?

Caprylic acid occurs in both animal-derived and plant-based foods. It is best known for its association with coconut oil, but goat’s and sheep’s milk also contain larger amounts of this medium-chain fatty acid – it is no coincidence that the first part of the name is derived from the Latin word for “goat” (capra).


Special MCT oil obtained from coconut oil also contains caprylic acid – but in a significantly higher concentration than the original product. In addition to caprylic acid, coconut oil provides other natural components of the coconut, whereas MCT oil is specifically concentrated in medium-chain fatty acids.

Effects: What does caprylic acid do in the body?

As a medium-chain fatty acid, caprylic acid is metabolised differently by the body than long-chain fatty acids, such as those found in vegetable oils and nuts. Due to its shorter chain length, caprylic acid can be absorbed directly without bile acids, whereas long-chain fatty acids depend on bile acids for absorption. In the liver, caprylic acid is converted into so-called ketone bodies, which the body can use directly as a source of energy.


Caprylic acid is also being researched in connection with the intestinal environment. One area of focus is its possible role in interactions with microorganisms in the digestive tract, including certain yeasts such as Candida albicans.


Taking and dosing caprylic acid

In addition to being obtained through the diet – for example from coconut oil or MCT oil – caprylic acid can also be supplemented specifically in capsule form. Capsules already contain the fatty acid in a fixed dosage.


Caprylic acid is best taken with meals and sufficient fluids. Typical daily doses range from approximately 500 to 1,500 milligrams, although these may vary depending on the manufacturer and preparation. Many people begin with a lower dose and gradually increase it, or divide the daily dose into several separate doses throughout the day.


Caprylic acid is frequently taken for a limited period of several months. Anyone who is uncertain about the dosage or duration of use should consult a doctor or therapist.
