Orthomolecular Medicine and Micronutrient Medicine

Mikronährstoffmedizin

A healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet is essential for our health. For some time now, the number of studies showing the role individual micronutrients play has been growing. This is where modern micronutrient medicine comes in, which has evolved from the principles of orthomolecular medicine developed in the 1960s.

But what exactly is orthomolecular medicine, and how did it pave the way for today’s micronutrient medicine? Learn more here about the field of micronutrient medicine and its origins.

What is orthomolecular medicine?

Linus Pauling, a biochemist and Nobel Prize laureate, coined the term orthomolecular medicine in the 1960s. The word “orthomolecular” can be translated as “the right molecules”.

According to Linus Pauling’s definition, orthomolecular medicine is “the preservation of good health and the treatment of disease by varying the concentrations of substances normally present in the human body and required for health.”

In simpler terms: Orthomolecular medicine uses vitamins, minerals, and other micronutrients to support health. These micronutrients are essential components of our diet – they are involved in ensuring that cells function properly and metabolic processes run smoothly.

Orthomolecular Medicine – Time for a Change

In the past, the focus was primarily on very high-dose vitamin therapies such as vitamin C, for which there were hardly any studies available at the time. As a result, orthomolecular medicine faced criticism, some of which still persists to this day.

Caution is advised when high-dose orthomolecular therapy with vitamins and similar substances is promoted as a miracle cure. This is untrustworthy and even dangerous!

Modern Micronutrient Medicine Today

Micronutrient medicine (also known as micronutrient therapy) supports health and is a specialized field within modern holistic medicine. It is based on current and high-quality studies, which increasingly show how important adequate micronutrient intake is for a healthy life. A balanced diet always forms the foundation!

However, some data also indicate that adequate intake is not always achieved for various reasons. Well-known examples include:

  • Vitamin D in winter,
  • Vitamin B12, calcium, and iron in vegans, and
  • Iodine as well as long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, since many people eat little or no fish.

What Makes Good Micronutrient Medicine?

The foundation of effective micronutrient medicine is proper guidance. Therefore, taking micronutrients should ideally be supervised by an expert – for example, a nutritional or orthomolecular medicine specialist, a nutritionist, or another experienced therapist in the field. The consultation may include a nutritional analysis or, depending on the micronutrient, a blood test.

In addition, high-quality, well-coordinated supplements are crucial – especially dietary supplements. The motto “more is better” does not apply here. The products must be developed for specific areas of use and meet the latest scientific standards. That’s why a dedicated scientific team at FormMed continuously works to optimize the supplements based on the latest research.
