Hormonal Balance During Menopause – How Micronutrients Can Provide Support

Hormones are the body's chemical messengers and regulate many processes. During menopause, their balance changes significantly – so targeted support for hormonal balance during this stage of life can be beneficial. Micronutrient medicine offers several approaches: for example, pantothenic acid contributes to the normal synthesis of steroid hormones, while vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity. Magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and normal psychological function. In addition, several plant compounds are currently a focus of research into menopause.

By the way: If you would like to receive regular information about micronutrients and our supplements, we recommend our FormMed Select Benefits Programme. Vitamin B6 and pantothenic acid: micronutrients for hormones

Hormones are the body's chemical messengers – they regulate emotions, sleep and how the body responds to change. During menopause, their balance changes significantly.

For hormones to be produced and for cells to respond to them properly, the body needs cofactors:

  • Pantothenic acid contributes to the production of the basic structures from which oestrogen and progesterone are formed.
  • Vitamin B6 influences how sensitively the body's cells respond to hormones.

Magnesium, omega-3 and tryptophan: micronutrients for the nervous system and mood

Changes in hormonal balance also affect the production of chemical messengers in the brain – with consequences for mood and sleep. The following nutrients support the nervous system:

  • Magnesium helps regulate the excitability of nerve cells and can help reduce tiredness and fatigue.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids are important components of nerve cell membranes.
  • Tryptophan is the amino acid from which the body produces serotonin, often referred to as the ‘feel-good hormone’.

Red clover, soya and ashwagandha: plant compounds in the focus of research

Red clover and soya contain so-called phytoestrogens: plant compounds whose structure is similar to the body's own oestrogen. Researchers are investigating the role they may play in symptoms such as hot flushes or vaginal dryness.

Ashwagandha belongs to the group of adaptogens – plant compounds traditionally believed to support the body during periods of stress and change. Whether and how these effects may apply to menopause is currently the subject of research.
