Swallowing capsules and tablets – this trick makes it easier!

By nature, we are used to only swallowing chopped food. Therefore, we sometimes find it difficult to swallow capsules or tablets and some wonder how best to take micronutrient supplements.

Capsule-Nick-Trick and Pill-Bottle-Trick

Scientists at Heidelberg University Hospital have developed two techniques that make it easier to swallow even large capsules and tablets: the capsule-nod trick and the tablet-bottle trick.

In general, capsules and tablets should always be taken sitting or standing and with at least 200 ml of water.

Swallowing capsules and tablets – the correct head position

Capsules are easier to swallow with the head tilted forward. This is because this head position widens the esophagus. If, on the other hand, you tilt your head back, the esophagus narrows. The capsule has less space, making swallowing more difficult - especially with large capsules. In addition, capsules usually contain some air due to the way they are manufactured and float to the top of a water-filled mouth. Because the head is slightly lowered, the throat is also at the top. Once the capsule is in the throat, it is easy to swallow. If you tilt your head back, however, the capsule floats in the opposite direction to the tip of the tongue. This lengthens the swallowing distance. It is different with tablets: When using the tablet bottle trick, you should not tilt your head forward - but always slightly back. This makes it much easier for the tablet to be carried along with the rush of water.

Why capsules?

Capsules offer many advantages. That is why we primarily rely on this form of administration. Because quality is of the utmost importance to FormMed.

Capsule preparations usually contain no additives or excipients. They are also particularly easy to swallow because they float down the esophagus with liquid like a boat.

Effervescent tablets or granules often contain flavors or sugar to make them taste better when dissolved in water.

Tablets usually require excipients to be stable. They also often need a coating to make them easier to swallow.

FormMed uses purely plant-based cellulose capsules for most of its preparations. These capsule shells are particularly gentle on the stomach and easy to digest, as they dissolve after just five minutes.
